Our Story

APOD Australia is dedicated to sharing genuine astrophotography captured by people across Australia and New Zealand. We believe the night sky belongs to everyone, and we’re proud to highlight imagers of all genders, all backgrounds, and all skill levels.

The goal is simple: celebrate real skies, real people, and the incredible creativity of our local community. Each feature comes from backyard or locally captured images, keeping things authentic and true to the Southern Hemisphere.

We also share the occasional international capture or science-related highlight when there’s something truly special happening in the universe.

Our History

APOD Australia began as a simple idea to give local astrophotographers a dedicated place to share their view of the Southern Hemisphere sky. What started as a small community quickly grew into a vibrant hub of backyard imagers, professionals, and space enthusiasts from across Australia and New Zealand.

Astronomy Picture of the Day was built to highlight genuine, locally captured images and celebrate astrophotography at every skill level.

Today, we remain focused on keeping things authentic. Real skies, real people, while continuing to grow a warm, inclusive community that loves the cosmos.
